The island's oceanic subtropical climate is influenced by the cool trade winds and the warm Gulf Stream. During the warmest month, August, the temperature climbs to 30°C, but in winter it does not fall below 18°C. The local conditions are ideal for year-round holidays.
The average temperature is 18 to 23°C. Although the Azores anticyclone provides enough moisture, rainy days come mostly in the winter and prolonged torrential rains are truly an exception. The snow line starts at 1,200 metres above sea level and the highest mountain peaks can be seen covered in snow.
The main tourist season coincides with autumn, winter and the early spring months.
